New York law requires instruction for at least 180 days per school year. This must total a minimum of 900 hours for grades 1–6 and 990 hours for grades 7–12. These instructional hours must be documented in your quarterly reports.

To begin homeschooling in New York, you must first submit a Notice of Intent to your local school district's superintendent. (For Manhattan, you can email the NYC Department of Education at letterofintent@schools.nyc.gov). After the district acknowledges your notice, you must submit an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) detailing your curriculum for the year. You are also required to file quarterly reports and a year-end evaluation.

Families outside New York can access our expert tutors either in-person (we coordinate travel for in-home instruction) or through our secure online platform. New York state requires homeschooling to cover specific subjects, which expand as students get older. For grades 1–6, required subjects include English, math, reading, science, social studies, physical education, health, music, art, and library skills. In middle and high school, the requirements add history, geography, advanced science, government, economics, and electives. While these subjects are mandatory, you can always add other topics of interest to your curriculum.
